Uche Fuels Straightforward Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
