The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
