Crew Member Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

The scientist and activist, a bioastronautics research scientist, was aboard the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
